Instructions for the Android beta app

How to join or leave the Android beta app program

As you start testing the beta app on your device, you may run into some bugs. When you do find issues, please add a report to the bugs-feature-request channel on Discord.

Join the Android beta app program:

Important: To get the beta version of our app, the original app must already be installed on your device. The beta app WILL replace the original app on your device.

  1. Make sure the Legacy AI Dungeon app is installed on your device but not currently running.
  2. Use this link: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aidungeon
  3. Under ā€œJoin the beta,ā€ tap Join.
  4. Tap Join on the confirmation pop-up.
  5. ā€œBeta signup in progress" and "Joining beta" messages will appear.
  6. Close the Play Store and then follow the link in step two again.
  7. If you see a ā€œYouā€™re a beta testerā€ message, the new AI Dungeon app should be ready for testing!

If youā€™re still having trouble accessing the beta app, please follow these instructions:

Immediately after Step 5, when the Play Store shows a "Joining beta" message, you're in one of two high-level states:

State 1: Beta registration is in-progress ("Joining beta" message)

State 2: Beta registration is complete ("You're a beta tester" message)

The page might not automatically update for State 2 though, so weā€™ve included Step 6 as a way to reliably refresh the status.

Even after Step 6, you still may see a "Joining beta" message on this page. In that case, you're still in State 1 and the best solution is to check again later before moving forward.

Now, when you do get to State 2ā€”meaning, you reload the AI Dungeon Play Store page and see the "You're a beta tester" messageā€”you're probably not quite done yet.

After the beta registration is completed, the system still needs to formerly update the app before you can access the beta version. There are a couple of possible sub-states you might be in right now:

State 2.1: the AI Dungeon app page has an Update button. This means you should tap the button and manually run the update. After you do that, you can start using the beta app!

State 2.2: the AI Dungeon app page has a Play button, instead of Update. This could mean one of two things:

State 2.2.1: you have auto-updates enabled, and your device has silently updated without your intervention.

State 2.2.2: your device hasn't actually detected the update yet, in which case, you still have Legacy installed.

To figure out which state your app is in, you must look at the app version information in the Play Store:

  1. Scroll until you see "About this game":
  2. image
  3. Tap the right-arrow ā€œā†’ā€ at the far right of "About this game".
  4. Scroll until you reach the "Game info" section.
  5. Check the Version number:
    1. image

1.2.28 is the current Phoenix version number.

    2. A version number of 1.2.X indicates that the Play Store is currently providing a Phoenix version to you.
      • If you see 1.2.X, and the AI Dungeon app page has a Play button, this is State 2.2.1, and you can start using the beta app!
      • If you see 1.2.X, and the AI Dungeon app page has an Update button, you should run the update, and then you can start using the beta app.
    3. A version number of 1.1.X indicates that the Play Store is currently providing a Legacy version to you. If this is the case, you are not ready to use the beta app yet.
      • If you see 1.1.X at all, and the AI Dungeon app page has a Play button, this is State 2.2.2, and you need to force your device to check for an update in the Play Store.
        1. Starting from the screen where we found the version number:

        2. Tap the left-arrow ā€œā†ā€ in the upper-left corner to back out of the Details screen.
        3. Tap the left-arrow ā€œā†ā€ in the upper-left corner to back out of the AI Dungeon app page. This should take you to the Play Store home screen.
        4. Tap your profile icon ā€œšŸ‘¤ā€ in the upper-right corner.
        5. Select "Manage apps & device" from the popup:
        6. image

You should land on the Overview page. From here, you'll be in one of two conditions:

        7. Condition 1: An update is already pending. Your device may have detected the new AI Dungeon version somewhere along the way here. In this case:
          1. image
          2. Tap ā€œSee detailsā€ to confirm it's actually trying to update the AI Dungeon app. This will open a ā€œPending downloadsā€ page:
          3. image
          4. From here, tap the Update button next to AI Dungeon or just tap Update all. Either one should trigger the beta app update.

If AI Dungeon is not listed, but other apps are, you must run those app updates before you can force a check for any others.

If the AI Dungeon update still doesnā€™t show up after all other updates are run, or all other apps on your device were already fully updated when you entered ā€œManage apps & deviceā€ and the AI Dungeon update hasn't shown up yet, you'll be in the second condition.

        8. Condition 2: No updates are pending. Your device has no other apps currently requiring updates, and hasn't detected the AI Dungeon update yet:
          1. image

In this case, you need to force your device to check for updates again, after which it should detect the Phoenix update and make it available to you:

          2. Start by tapping "See recent updates". This should take you to the Manage tab, showing Installed software sorted by recently updated:
          3. image
          4. From there, tap ā€œUpdates availableā€. If the AI Dungeon update still hasn't been detected yet, you should see this:
          5. image
          6. Tap the Check for updates button. Shortly afterwards, AI Dungeon should appear in the available updates list:
          7. image
          8. Tap the check box next to AI Dungeon. Then tap the update icon (left one, of the pair of icons at the upper-right) to run the update:
          9. image

Alternately, you can go back to the Overview tab and use the process shown earlier for when the device has auto-detected the update before you got there.

At this point, we recommend going back to the AI Dungeon Play Store page, scrolling down to ā€œAbout this gameā€, and re-checking the app version number. If you see 1.2.X, and the AI Dungeon app page has a Play button, you can start using the beta app! If you still donā€™t see that version number, please reach out to support@aidungeon.com.

Leave the Android beta app program (revert back to Legacy AI Dungeon):

Good news! This is very similar to the upgrade process at the start. You're just leaving the beta app program instead of joining it.

The bad news is:

  • You have to manually uninstall the Phoenix beta app, and then re-install Legacy app. There is no auto-downgrade like there is auto-updating to beta.
  • The Play Store cache may stick a bit more on the downgrade flow than on the upgrade flow, so you may not be able to access the Legacy app very quickly.
  • There is not a graceful way to force your device to check for the Legacy version like there is checking for the beta app update.

Follow these steps to revert back to the Legacy AI Dungeon app:

  1. Start with the beta app installed on your device, and the AI Dungeon Play Store page shows a ā€œYouā€™re a beta testerā€ message.
  2. From the AI Dungeon app page, tap the ā€œLeaveā€ option under the beta tester section:
  3. image

ā€œLeaveā€ is in the bottom-left of this screenshot.

  4. Tap "Leave" on the popup to confirm:
  5. image
  6. Your tester status will switch to "Removing you from the beta":
  7. image
  8. The fine print at the top will also indicate removal is in progress:
  9. image
  10. Close the Play Store. Then reload the AI Dungeon app page in the Play Store using this link.
  11. Verify that you have been fully removed from the beta. The beta section of the page should look as if you've never joined the program. If removal is not complete, please wait a while and check again later.
  12. Once you've confirmed that you're fully out of the beta program, tap the Uninstall button on the AI Dungeon app page.
  13. Tap the left-arrow ā€œā†ā€ in the upper-left corner until you're at the Play Store home page.
  14. Tap your profile icon, then "Manage apps & deviceā€.
  15. Switch to the ā€œManageā€ tab, then select ā€œUpdates availableā€.
    1. If your device is fully updated, you should see the "You're all set" screen.
    2. If your device is not fully updated, you should run all other app updates before proceeding further.
  16. Tap the "Check for updates" text. The screen should show a list trying to load, but then it should revert to the "You're all set" screen.
    1. If some updates do come up that are not for AI Dungeon, that's okay. The point here is just to force an update check and let it run to completion.
  17. Close the Play Store. Then reload the AI Dungeon app page in the Play Store using this link.
  18. Scroll down to ā€œAbout this gameā€ and re-check the app version number:
    1. If you see 1.1.X, you should now be able to re-install the AI Dungeon app and end up with the Legacy version.
    2. If you still see 1.2.X, the Play Store cache may not be updating. In this case, please close the Play Store and check back again later. If you canā€™t access Legacy after that period, please reach out to support@aidungeon.com.
