Why does the AI forget or mix things up?

The AI can only look back so far in your adventure’s history (called ‘context’ when it’s passed into the AI model). The context limit is different for each membership tier, but the standard limit is around 4000 tokens for free players. This is around a few thousand characters.

When information starts falling out of context, the AI loses its ability to look back and reference certain parts of the story, meaning that most of the time, it’s just making it up as best it can.

The best way to ensure that the AI keeps track of details you need it to remember is by using Plot Essentials and entering important information like details about your protagonist and immediate world events, as this information is guaranteed to remain in the AI’s context.

You can also turn on the Memory System in your gameplay settings, which is a feature made and intended to keep track of your story’s history. The Memory System automatically adds important events to the context of your story, making it easier for the AI to know what’s going on.

However, because AI is fickle and context is limited, this is not guaranteed to work 100% of the time. In cases where the AI is failing to recall important details about your characters, your best bet is to Retry and see if it catches on, rewrite your included Plot Essentials to be more specific, or simply use Edit mode to correct its mistakes.
